For curious travellers

Experiences & Things to Do

From tiger-spotting jeep safaris to mask-free Chhau dance workshops, Mayurbhanj offers experiences you will struggle to find elsewhere in India.

Top experiences

Eight curated ways to experience Mayurbhanj

Thrill

1. Jungle safari in Similipal

Pre-dawn jeep ride into Chahala or Joranda ranges with a registered forest guide. Tiger sightings are never guaranteed but the rewards are staggering: forest elephants, gaur herds, sambar deer and 350+ bird species.

Best season: November–April. Tip: Carry a 4x4 with ground clearance.

UNESCO

2. Mayurbhanj Chhau dance workshop

Short workshops (3–5 days) teach basic Chhau footwork — the dhaam dhaam rolls, the bounds, the sword-routines. Centres in Baripada run them before Chaitra Parab and again in October-March.

Ethical

3. Tribal village & craft visit

Visit Santhal or Ho villages around Khiching, Rairangpur and the Karanjia sub-division through local community-led programmes. Buy Dokra bronze figurines, terracotta art and palm-leaf engravings directly from artisans.

Nature

4. Waterfall day-hikes

October to January is the prime window for trekking to Barehipani, Joranda, Devkund and several offbeat falls. The mist, the moss, the roar — every hike feels cinematic.

Birding

5. Birdwatching in Sal forest

Similipal is a birder’s paradise — endemic hornbills, paradise flycatchers, racket-tailed drongos and Sri Lanka frogmouths. Combine with Chahala safari for the best dawn light.

Photography

6. Long-lens photography trail

Both bird and wildlife photographers rate Similipal as one of eastern India’s best. Hire a local jeep guide who knows the tigress locations and the bird calls; don’t expect selfies — expect portfolios.

Family

7. Family-friendly picnic spots

Bhimkund’s grassy banks, the lower Similipal meadows and Maa Ambika Temple hill are perfect for a picnic. Avoid the park’s restricted zones for safety; the periphery has plenty of safe spots.

Heritage

8. Rath Yatra & festival nights

Plan around the Baripada Rath Yatra in June-July or the Chaitra Parab Chhau festival in March-April. Either one transforms a simple trip into a cultural pilgrimage.
